This proposed new power plant design for the banks of the river Tees is more than the traditional utilitarian structure - it challenges our preconceptions of what the aesthetic of industry can be. despite being reminiscent of a run of the mill power station with its familiar cooling tower shape dominating the entire building, the structure maintains an aura of environmentalism through cunning use of materials that aren't associated with heavy industry - not an ounce of concrete in sight.
its visual environmental credentials aside, the building plans to make a statement of intent for Great Britain's 'green' agenda - showing the countries commitment to clean energy to the world, it is just a shame that the power plant's fuel (biomass - in the form of palm kernel shells) is coming half way around the world - clearly not an ideal scenario, and one which shows that although the government is trying to do something about our energy predicament, we have a long way to go.
